Reading calendar dates, clock times and elapsed duration

Choose a calendar convention deliberately

A calendar month does not have a fixed number of days. Adding a month to the final day of a month therefore needs an explicit rule. Likewise, an inclusive count of dates is different from an elapsed difference between endpoints. The notes state which convention the current tool uses.

Clock times are not durations. An overnight shift needs a next-day assumption, and an unpaid break reduces paid time rather than changing the clock-out time. Monday–Friday counts do not automatically remove public holidays.

Distinguish wall-clock arithmetic from real elapsed time

Daylight-saving changes can skip a local clock time or repeat one. An IANA-zone conversion can identify a real instant and handle those transitions. Arithmetic on timezone-free date/time fields instead treats the entries as civil values without resolving a zone.

Check the zone, date range and endpoint convention when comparing systems. Calendar age can also depend on how a February 29 anniversary is handled; the arithmetic convention on this page does not determine jurisdiction-specific legal age.

Formula and calculation method

Durations are elapsed quantities, not clock times. Negative subtraction results retain a leading minus sign.

Frequently asked questions

How does this calculator work?

Durations are elapsed quantities, not clock times. Negative subtraction results retain a leading minus sign.

What assumptions should I check?

Check the units and definitions shown beside each input. Results use the values you enter.
