Understanding energy and nutrient estimates
Keep an estimate separate from a measured requirement
Energy equations use measurements and a reference population to estimate an average requirement. Activity multipliers add another assumption. A calculated maintenance amount can differ from measured expenditure, and a daily energy target entered in a form is not automatically a clinical recommendation.
Macronutrient grams and energy shares are different units. Converting grams to energy uses the factors stated by the calculator. Compare percentages only when their denominator is the same, and check that an entered energy target leaves a nonnegative remainder for the nutrients being solved.
Read the page’s specific input convention
A protein factor in grams per kilogram needs body mass in the expected unit. An activity MET value needs a matching activity and intensity. A program-specific food score must come from the program when the calculator asks for an official entered value.
Use the formula and worked example below to identify what was estimated and what was entered. Individual nutritional needs and medical treatment require context that a general-purpose calculator does not establish.
Formula and calculation method
Protein grams=body weight(kg)×chosen protein factor. Fat grams=calories×fat share/9. Carbohydrate grams=(calories−4×protein−9×fat)/4.
Energy target and allocation are supplied by you. Defaults are examples, not an individual dietary prescription.
Scope and Limitations
- For adult arithmetic planning. Not for prescribing intake during pregnancy, childhood, kidney disease or eating-disorder treatment. Negative remaining carbohydrate energy is rejected.

Frequently asked questions
How does this calculator work?
Protein grams=body weight(kg)×chosen protein factor. Fat grams=calories×fat share/9. Carbohydrate grams=(calories−4×protein−9×fat)/4.
What assumptions should I check?
For adult arithmetic planning. Not for prescribing intake during pregnancy, childhood, kidney disease or eating-disorder treatment. Negative remaining carbohydrate energy is rejected. Energy target and allocation are supplied by you. Defaults are examples, not an individual dietary prescription.
Can I save or print this calculation?
Use Copy link with inputs to reproduce the scenario, Download results for a text record, or Print. Where a schedule is shown, its CSV download includes every row.
What happens when I change measurement units?
The linked unit selector converts the existing measurement so it represents the same physical quantity. Entering a different number after switching units changes the underlying input. The result’s own units are shown beside its value.
